The History of The Grand Hotel
The story of The Grand Hotel begins in 1901, when the original building was constructed by Hamilton Barry as a residence for his sister. In 1927, under the stewardship of Mr Wolfe, the property began its next chapter as a place of hospitality.
Over the years, the building has become part of Robertson’s historic streetscape, with connections to the Barry family and, later, the Avalon Hotel Group. The property also incorporates the Victorian villa formerly known as the Travel Lodge, which dates back to approximately 1902/1903.
Today, these historic buildings have been restored and adapted to offer modern accommodation while retaining the character of this longstanding Robertson landmark.
A Celebration of Robertson Wine Country
Robertson lies at the heart of one of South Africa’s well-known wine-producing regions, with vineyards and wine estates forming an important part of the landscape and local character.
The Grand Hotel celebrates this connection through its 9 individually styled hotel rooms, each named after a wine estate in the Robertson area. It’s a nod to the winemaking heritage of the valley and the people and places that have helped shape the region.
With a central location in Robertson, the hotel provides a convenient base for exploring the surrounding wine estates, restaurants and attractions, all while staying in the comfort of an intimate five-star boutique hotel.
